West Colfax Transportation Safety Project
Construction Updates

Important safety improvements are coming to West Colfax Avenue between Sheridan and Wadsworth starting in early 2025. Construction Updates will be posted here. This is your best place to get information on construction progress, current closures, and impacts to travel along West Colfax between Sheridan and Wadsworth boulevards! Starting in early 2025, construction is expected to begin on continuous medians from Sheridan to Teller Street — an important step toward making Colfax safer for pedestrians, motorists, and transit users alike.

Monthly Office Hours
The West Colfax Transportation Safety Project and North Dry Gulch Improvement Project represent the largest infrastructure investment in Lakewood's history, and the coordinated construction for these projects is underway.  The project managers for this work have office hours each month for business owners and tenants to come ask questions or discuss concerns.  The office hours are 1-4 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the Hub, 6501 W. Colfax Ave.

Construction of the median improvements from Sheridan Blvd to Pierce St are complete. Future work in the medians includes finishing irrigation and planting trees and shrubs between Sheridan Blvd and Pierce St. Landscaping is anticipated to extend into Spring 2026 for the median between Pierce Street and Teller Street. Re-striping of West Colfax Avenue from three lanes to two lanes is expected to begin in early November, which will occur at night to minimize impacts to traffic. Xcel Energy will also be on-site over the coming months installing new metered power sources for the median lights and future improvements planned for Phase 2.

West Colfax Avenue will continue to keep two lanes of traffic open during the coming phases of construction, with short-term lane closures down to one lane as needed to facilitate a safe working area for the contractor.

The main median improvements included in Phase 1 are planned to be completed by early December, with some work extending into Spring of 2026 like wiring for the new median lights and landscaping. Phase 2 of the project is expected to start construction in late 2026 or early 2027.

Temporary lanes closures on West Colfax Avenue
Temporary lanes closures have begun on West Colfax Avenue between Pierce and Lamar streets for work on two significant projects in the corridor. These projects are the
North Dry Gulch Improvement Project to address flooding issues in the corridor and the
West Colfax Safety Project to address traffic and pedestrian safety in the corridor.

These closures will limit left turns at intersections, and it will require the closure of through traffic on Newland. These temporary closures are expected to be in place for several months.

The lane closures are needed to conduct work on gas mains and other utilities, followed by installation of a large culvert pipe across the width of West Colfax, which will lead to additional temporary lane closures in the coming months.

Currently the westbound “inside” left lane next to the median is closed for this work. Closures of the eastbound “inside” lane will begin later this month.
